Scamander is located just 18km from both St Helens and St Marys and sits in the centre of the surf coast. Because of its beautiful setting at the mouth of the Scamander River and its wide sandy beaches, it has become a popular holiday destination. With a population of 600 people it has a wealth of activities and facilities, including golf course, bowls club, surf lifesaving club, supermarket, takeaway, post office, caravan park, camp grounds and even a resort hotel.

Scamander is a favourite spot for surfers being central to many of the best surf breaks and having a regular wave breaking at the river mouth right in front of the main street. Bream fishing is renowned in this part of the world with Scamander River being known as the best bream fishing estuary in Australia. Dolphins and whales can also be sighted offshore in migration season.

Scamander has a variety of properties to appeal to a wide range of people with a large number enjoying beach and sea views. Houses vary from small shacks to large family homes and accommodation arrangements.

Inland is Upper Scamander which is mostly larger lifestyle acreages and farming land with orchards and berry farms, some of which have major frontage to Scamander river.
